This guide to Lisbon which Fernando Pessoa left
typewritten in English in 1925, is a love letter to
his city. This edition, with stunning and unique
illustrations, shows us a fearless cicerone making
decisions about the paths to take and showing
in-depth and detailed knowledge regarding the most
remarkable streets and monuments of the capital; one
can note a great desire to reveal the most
significant treasures to the eyes of outsiders.
Some scholars of Pessoa’s work have suggested to us
that this work is devoid of the metaphorical highs
of Bernardo Soares or the impetus of other
heteronyms. And this is to the good: he has
bequeathed us a guide to Lisbon halfway between the
two world wars that will forever be accurate and
valuable - both for visitors and for the people of
Lisbon, who, after perusing these lines will look at
their city with the smile of those who know its
details that their fellow countrymen overlook.
